Reclaiming Wednesday

It’s Wednesday- and for the first time in way too long, I have had a Kay day- a real Wicked Wednesday!

For the past year I’ve had to give the other ‘mes’ priority as -frankly- I sell more books as Jenny Kane and Jennifer Ash, than I do as Kay. However, after receiving all the rights back to my erotica novels- not to mention nearly all my anthologies- I have decided it’s time to make Wednesday’s Kay days again.

I am in the process of revamping, reediting, and generally improving, all of my erotica- one book at a time. As you can imagine, after being in the business for so long, that leaves a hell of a lot of books demanding my attention- and I will be tackling them one at a time!

I am starting with my anthologies and one of my novels…I will reveal which very soon.

The anthologies will all be available on Radish first (an online download app for Android)- and then on Amazon etc in Kindle format. The novels will be Kindle etc first, and then paperback if demand is high enough…

I have to say, it has been tremendous fun going back over my old work, picking new covers, rewriting blurbs- groaning at past missed editing errors- and laughing at how times have changed! It seems funny now to read about a man who delivers videos door to door- 13 years ago the mobile video rental van was part of life!

I’d better go and get on with the re-edits. Don’t forget lots of my books are still available to buy- just check out the book lists at the top of this blog page.

Happy reading,

Annabel Allan: Wildfire

Today I’m delighted to welcome Annabel Allan to my blog to give us an insight into her work as an erotic romance writer.

Over to you Annabel…

How did I get into writing erotic romance?

I already had a background in romance (historical romance), so the romance part was easy! It was the erotica part that was actually difficult to get into, since my sex scenes before were just “love scenes” and didn’t go into descriptive detail.

I found inspiration in other novels, such as Maya Banks Breathless Series and Shayla Black’s Wicked Lovers Series (both excellent series!). It was great to find hot erotic romance that I could learn from. I tried to learn from their style and adapt my own.

It was a learning experience, that’s for sure! But, I just did as my muse told me and wrote Wildfire, which at the time was under the working title Licking the Flames.

I actually had no plans on making a series, but I had inadvertently made the ending open ended for a second novel. My spidery-sense must have been tingling at that point!

After I queried a few publishers and agents, I got accepted by Accent Press and signed for a three book deal, which of course, led to four books. Again, not my plan, but you got to go with the flow.

I saw that office romances were actually quite popular, so I decided that would be the setting. Then I used my ideal man for Quinn and based Stephanie on myself, hence it being her POV. I then just took fantasies and turned them into prose. It seemed to work, especially with the romance aspect of the novel.

I also decided to set it in my city, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I know the city fairly well and figured being in a big city can make for some good drama, as seen in Firewhirl.

What’s next for Annabel Allan?

It’s actually going to be the BDSM world with her new series Risqué Behaviour. Much like Shayla Black’s Wicked Lovers series, a personal favourite of mine, it’s going to take secondary characters from each novel and make them main characters in the next. Each will have a theme and it’s going to be extremely spicy. I’m very excited for it!

Blurb for Wildfire

Stephanie Fournier is a simple assistant at a law firm in Toronto, Ontario. She has her 9 to 5, but her real dream is to be a famous writer — until Robert Quinlan, the gorgeous CEO of the company takes up her thoughts. At first she takes to his obvious interest with glee…and then he finds out she’s a virgin. His sudden disinterest is not only embarrassing, but awkward around the workplace, especially with the heat still present between them. Stephanie sets out to prove she’s unshaken, only to entice him back into her thrall. But can an amateur really win over an expert in the art of seduction?

Dabbling Outside My Comfort Zone: Imagine

It is often said that we should all do something that scares us every day. That it is healthy to take ourselves outside of our personal comfort zone.

As a child, just the act of having to answer a question out loud during class was enough to scare me to death. My comfort zone at that time could have been described as being where I was either on my own, or with friends who wouldn’t ask me tricky questions! Things haven’t really changed much, yet these days I seem to be living outside of my comfort zone more and more often.

Comfort Zone

Writing erotica in itself is pretty wide of my comfort zone – at least it used to be. Over the last eleven years however, I have become at home with the smutty words and phrases I write- it is now the act of marketing my work that takes me out of my zone.

To write about myself, my work, to ‘BIG IT UP’ is so unlike me. Even carrying business cards with the words, ‘Kay Jaybee Erotica’ on them, is rather like hang gliding over enemy lines- even after over a decade.

Logo

Extreme bravery is required whenever I travel to London, Manchester or anywhere else, to read my erotica out loud to an audience. And when I teach workshops or writing classes- despite really looking forward to them- I know I will be the victim of sweaty palms and a nervous stomach!!

When I’m out in the world- at places like Eroticon- on a writer’s panel, answering any questions about the art of writing erotica, and what on earth made me do so in the first place, I have to think hard. The fear that I won’t be able to answer your questions is never far away.  I’m just a writer good at sex scenes after all- what the hell do I know?

books 3

It is  the question and answer sessions that make me more nervous than anything! What if I can’t answer the questions? What if I can’t hear the questions in the first place? What if? What if?  For me, it is like being ten years old all over again, not understanding a word my English teacher just said to me! Yet, I know full well, that once I have done it. Once the panel is complete- I will have loved every second of it!

At a more local level, as more people become aware of what I do for a living, I find I am asked to step a toe out of my comfort zone here to. A few years ago for example, I found myself roped- with a huge amount of nerves- into being a model for a fantastic new boutique called Snob, at a fashion show in a local hotel. An excellent evening of jazz and singing could so easily have been spoilt by me falling off my gorgeous boots, or falling to turn, move in the right way, etc, etc, etc…..

To say the adrenalin was pumping puts it mildly- but, with hair that was styled into something that I can only describe as ‘French Aristocrat on the way to the guillotine’- held together with an ozone layers worth of hairspray and 37 bobby pins, I wiggled the hips and waggled my fingers in the words most beautiful mittens, and survived the experience! It was- as you’d imagine, good fun. So why do I get into such a state before hand!!?? Stage fright will be the death of me!!

stage fright

At the Tiverton Literary Festival in 2016 I did an after dinner floor show about ‘The Real Life of an Erotica Writer’- this included taking off many layers of clothes…Was I nervous? That doesn’t even cover it. And yet…yes. It was fantastic fun – you should have seen the raffle…(I am available for future bookings if you fancy a corporate event with a difference!)

It doesn’t matter what I do, or how far out of my comfort zone I step, I’m always going to suffer from stage fright. Once those lights go up however…I LOVE IT!

And it’s just as well I do! These are undeniably hard times for independent writers. With erotica publishers falling like confetti, few of us can afford to simply write for a living. Luckily, I enjoy teaching so much, that fellow author Alison Knight and I decided to start a creative writing workshop company so that we could continue to earn money while doing something we love!

Imagine: Creative and Life Writing has recently launched in the South West of England-(although we travel anywhere in the UK or abroad). So if you fancy finding out what courses are on offer, check out our business page. www.imaginecreativewriting.co.uk

From romance to erotica, beginners to old hands like myself- we have something for everyone. If you fancy booking us to teach a class rather than as a student, just drop me  a line. (For the purposes of the company, I operate under my other pen name- Jenny Kane)

Right- I’m off now to hide under my scarf, hat and dark glasses, to bustle my way through town, writing my next workshop lesson under the cover of ‘woman writing shopping list’ in the corner of the café.

Happy reading and writing

‘The Collector’ Rides Again

Last year I re-released my first solo work, The Collector. It had a total re-edit, and added 2 brand news HOT stories to the 20 already snuggled between it’s pages.

The Collector 2016 b

Blurb

Gathering salaciously erotic stories against an everyday backdrop of bus trips, train journeys, coffee shops, and restaurants, The Collector documents a wide variety of sexual encounters as she travels Great Britain.

The Collector’s research takes her into every arena of the erotic experience, from love, lust, submission and dominance, to voyeurism and beyond.

Are you brave enough to see if it was your supposedly private conversation she overheard – and then wrote down?

The stories within The Collector vary greatly in length, style, and taste. The best way to think of it is as an erotica menu- lots of tasty tasters to help you discover which erotica works best for you. If you alike all sorts of erotica already, then you should (I hope!) like them all!

Here are a couple of lovely reviews!

‘WOW, what a GREAT book! Ms. Jaybee, the true author of THE COLLECTOR, honestly has me curious if she is, in fact, this collector. Her intros were so well written and believable that I fell under an erotic spell while reading. I didn’t LOVE every story, but I really did at least LIKE almost all of them for one reason or another. My favorites were Treasure, where a woman invites a friend of a friend back to her place so he can discover her hidden treasure; and Crushed, where a 2 (and a half) people in a standstill crowd experienced a hedonistic anonymous encounter. If I heard real life stories like these on a regular basis, I swear I would die from a state of constant arousal! … ‘ The Romance Reviews

‘Such a unique book.  The title was perfect for this book.  The Collector.  I know you are asking how I call an erotic book unique.  Well, it is because the author has such a wonderful way with writing.  I admit this is not my first Kay Jaybee book, and it will certainly not be my last.  Kaybee, is such a wonderful author.  The stories she writes are not just all sex, they each have meaning, plot, characters, challenges.  This book is no exception to her wonderful work.  Another amazing read by Jaybee.’ Bunny Reviews

Time Tracking with Samantha Winston

I’m delighted to be joined by Samantha Winston. She is with me today to share a little from her latest erotic adventure Time Tracking.

Over to you Samantha…

Hi Kay, and thank you for having me as a guest blogger! I’m really pleased to be here today to talk about my favourite thing : (well, favourite thing besides chocolate!) time-travel!

What would happen if a man from the past were brought to life in the present – a man frozen for centuries..? That’s what happens when Kell’s body is found in the Arctic, sold to the US Army, and reanimated in an ultra-secret base in Alaska (that everyone knows about).  In order to communicate, the army hires Allie, an expert in ancient languages. But the scientists don’t want Kell as an anthropological case – they want to study his brain and body for cryogenics. Not good news for Kell, who is basically a prisoner about to be executed. Allie decides to save him, and they set out in the Arctic with nothing but some high-tech snowsuits (thank you, US Army corps) and Kell’s knowledge of survival in the wilderness.

In the second part of the book, Bruce Steele, a tracker, wakes up in the far future. He’s been reanimated on a space station, somewhere in the Hera Galaxy. He’s alone – except for a very sexy, extremely pedantic android who is supposed to teach him all about modern society – except how can he concentrate with a raging hard-on? Apparently, when you’ve been frozen and thawed out – your extremities tingle…the scientists will be fascinated with that bit of info. Until then, Steele, a game tracker,  has to find a niche in an ultra-sophisticated technological world!

Time travel has always been my favourite subject – The Road to Alexander, published by Accent Press, is about a woman sent back to ancient Greece to interview Alexander the Great. So when I read about a man found in a glacier, and nearly intact, my mind started buzzing. Wouldn’t it be incredible to have him wake up and tell us about his life in the past? But how could he communicate? And from there, I imagined the story of Kell and Allie. But because I grew fond of the man tracking them, Bruce Steele, I made a story just for him, where he’s flung into the future and has to face the same sort of culture-shock Kell, the man from the Iron Age, did.

Excerpt:
Kell sat still, his eyes taking in her every move. As before, some things seemed familiar, while others made no sense. The brazier had a collapsible tube that fit into a hole in the tent. That made sense since smoke was a problem for tents. This brazier was made of white metal and stood on three sturdy legs. All that he had seen before. But this brazier had another, smaller tube that ran from the brazier to a small blue jug. The jug had a handle that turned, and a blue flame sprang from the top of the brazier so suddenly that Kell flinched.
Allie turned and patted his arm. “I’m sorry. All this must seem so strange to you.”
He closed his eyes. Strange was not the word. Everything he had known had become twisted and bizarre. Familiar things had mutated into frightening machines. Even horses had turned into rumbling machines that belched stinking fog and had one bright eye. No, that was untrue. He knew what was machine and what was alive. His world had its share of machines, but none that ran by themselves. A shiver ran over his body. Blindly, he put out his hand toward the warmth of the brazier. Fire still gave warmth.
His hand brushed against soft skin and he froze. Eyes still closed, he ran his fingertips over Allie’s brow, over her cheeks and across her jaw. He drew a line with his fingers, following her neck to where her pulse beat strongly. She caught his hand in hers, holding it tightly. Pulling her to him, he pressed his lips to the soft skin on her temple. Her curly hair tickled his face, but he didn’t open his eyes.
The feel of a woman…that hadn’t changed. The scent and taste of women hadn’t changed. A deep sigh escaped him as warmth crept into his bones. Soft and sweet, and strong and brave. “Allie,” he whispered. The tent leaned, buffeted by the wind, but the brazier warmed the air, and he opened his eyes to stare at the woman who had saved him from the prison.
“What is it?” Her big brown eyes were questioning. Her lashes cast jagged shadows on her cheeks.
“Thank you.” He slipped his hand behind her neck and pulled her to him.
A little hesitantly, she put her arms around his shoulders. “You’ve got such broad shoulders,” she said, a catch in her voice.
He tugged at her chemise and lifted it over her head, then stopped, perplexed. He had seen brassieres like hers in Rome, but they’d been made of knitted wool. This one was made of silk that stretched like a supple skin. She took it off, a smile curving her lips. Then she stood and slipped off her pants.
In the pale, blue light of the brazier, her skin took on the glow of polished marble. “You look like the statue of a nymph.” He got to his knees and cupped her buttocks in his hands. Holding her tightly, he pressed his face to her sex, letting the smell and feel of her soothe his shattered nerves.
