About Our Story

Does your family history contain scandal? Ours does, as recently as my mother’s grandfather, who was born a bastard in an era when that status carried far more stigma than now. His mother – a logger’s daughter who served as a camp cook – was shunned and shamed for much of her life. On the other side, my husband’s grandfather was a bigamist. A threshing crew foreman in the early 1900s, he married and had children in Missouri, then married again in Kansas. My husband’s grandmother divorced him when she learned of the other family; their son, my husband’s father, was ten years old.

We blessed—or perhaps cursed—our Through the Lens heroine with elements of these scandals. Naturally, she’s heard some of the stories. Through the Lens chronicles her struggle with these long-forgotten roots. Will she claim them, or run the other way?

Blurb

Prairie roots can be deceptive. Will Ellen Jeffers cling to the sedate past that’s familiar, or will she embrace a different version of her history—one that includes tragedy, scandal, fortitude, and freedom?

It’s 2002, and South Dakota third grade teacher Ellen Jeffers has signed up for a photography summer course and assistantship at an art academy in Minneapolis. Thirty-three, divorced for nearly a decade from her college boyfriend, she’s not seeking major change. She just hopes the course will enhance her teaching skills and her resume.

Aaron Brewster comes from privilege, and he has used that status to flaunt his family’s values and carve out a successful career as a photographer specializing in black and white erotic portraiture. Has he ever loved? His love is for beauty, sensuality, eroticism. His new uptight teaching assistant will never fit that vision. Should he send her packing? For reasons he cannot fathom, he takes her on as a challenge.

Aaron’s frontal assault shocks Ellen, but it also triggers something deep inside she’s never been willing to acknowledge. Is her beloved prairie a safe refuge, or will it become a crucible for transformation? The choice is not merely Ellen’s.

Wow, what an incredible book! Excerpt

Fixing his gaze on the rather stoic woman sitting across from him at the small table in his academy office, Aaron Brewster tried his best to get a good read on her. He’d spent much of his life reading women—their moods and their desires. He’d developed a reputation for being adept at capturing feminine subtleties in black and white.

Ellen Jeffers was one of those rare women who defied immediate description. She vacillated between projecting an air of haughtiness—which he supposed came with being a schoolteacher who seldom believed her audience understood her—to projecting an air of innocence characteristic of a girl from the South Dakota prairie making her way in the unfamiliar big city. And in between those poles, he witnessed prim and proper, mystery, smugness, disdain, awe, shyness, self-censure, and thankfully a spark or two of humor.

If she was going to work with him, he’d have to get her in front of the camera. It was through the camera lens that he could best sort out the nuances of a woman and his own feelings about her. Keeping his smile to himself, he wondered if his summer teaching assistant had ever posed in the nude.

He needed help with his tits-and-ass study, but the way Ellen Jeffers blanched at some of nude pics hanging on his office walls, he wasn’t sure she’d be helpful with that project. He’d take a wait-and-see position about her usefulness. At the very least, he needed an assistant comfortable enough in her own skin to help models prepare themselves for the scrutiny of the camera.

“Do you only do nude portraits?” Ellen asked, glancing quickly from one photo to another and back to him.

“Some subjects are partially clad,” he said dryly. “So does nudity bother you, Ellen? Is it okay if I call you Ellen? Given how close we’ll be working together, first names seem more natural.”

“Of course, please do.”

“And nudity?” He arched an eyebrow. “You are comfortable with nudity, right? You’ve been married. You’ve hung around art students, and you applied to this program.”

“My undergraduate college didn’t allow nude modeling.” She didn’t blink. “I had hoped to expand my knowledge of landscape photography or taking action pictures of children.”

“I see. You’re avoiding my question, but that’s okay. In case you’re wondering, I didn’t select you as my teaching assistant. You were the only person available when I returned from a conference. So if you want to blame someone for your misfortune, blame my colleagues. This is sort of like going on a blind date.” He paused. “I’ve only been on one. I didn’t like it.”

Ellen’s laughter came quick and a little harsh. “At least we can agree on that.” She swallowed. “So I guess it’s safe to assume that you don’t do weddings, family portraits and such.”

He shook his head. He’d love to have a window into the strawberry blonde’s brain as she appeared to check off her options. She didn’t have many, and he knew it. She could go back to South Dakota, but he’d already witnessed her grit. Ellen Jeffers wouldn’t run if she could manage at all.

She smacked her lips. “I haven’t spent much time around nudity”—she gave him a wry smile—”and much of that was in the dark. It may take me a while, but I’m sure I’ll be comfortable enough.”

Seductive Songs By Ria Restrepo

I’m delighted to welcome Ria Restrepo to my blog today to talk Chemical Sex…and the power of Seductive Songs.

Don’t miss out on the giveaway!

Over to you Ria…

Music has inspired me throughout my life on a number of levels, but especially in my writing. Whatever you’re thinking or feeling at any given point in your life, there’s probably a song that expresses it—maybe even better than you can articulate yourself.

I know there are times when I’m not entirely sure what’s going on in my head. Then I’ll hear a song that captures it exactly, so much so that it can be a little freaky. I think that goes to show how universal our thoughts and feelings are.

We all like to think we’re special or different in some way—and we are. But we’re also more alike than we tend to acknowledge. As humans, we all love and we all grieve. We all have dreams and disappointments. At times, we’re filled with overwhelming joy and the deepest despair. We all have failings we need to overcome and desires we yearn to make a reality.

Whatever you’re feeling, you’re undoubtedly not alone. And music often reminds us of that. While the meanings of some songs are crystal clear, others are more impressionistic, leaving plenty of room for interpretation. This allows listeners to mold the songs to fit their own personal point of view.

Sometimes, I’ll look up songs on websites where people discuss their meanings. I’m often surprised that songs I thought were pretty straightforward, others saw in a very different light. As much commonality as there is among us, our individual experiences tend to shape the way we look at things, causing wonderful variability.

Before I ever took my writing seriously, music inspired me. The R.E.M. song “Stand” was the premise for my high school salutatorian speech. I thought it tapped into what the other graduates and myself were probably experiencing at the time. Namely, the idea of direction and where we were going as we entered the “real world.”

Over the years, a number of songs have inspired stories, including Norah Jones’s “Come Away with Me,” Bob Dylan’s “Shelter from the Storm,” and Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are”—just to name a few. Some songs and the stories they inspired are more loaded with meaning than others. But some are just pure smutty fun.

A story inspired by the Divinyl’s “I Touch Myself,” which I posted on my blog, is a great example of a hot and naughty good time. Although there are some deeper declarations of love in the song, I focused on the line, “When I think about you, I touch myself.” In my story, the protagonist makes a provocative video of herself performing to the song and sends it to her lover while he’s at work.

When Oleander Plume asked me to write a story for Chemical [se]X 2: Just One More, I immediately said, “Yes!” I loved the first volume and was incredibly thrilled the Sisters in Smut [http://www.sistersinsmut.com] wanted to include me in the second volume. However, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to write—just that it had to feature aphrodisiac chocolates and have clear consent. It was the first time I had to write a made-to-order story.

While it was simmering in the back of my mind for a few days, I worked on other things. As is often the cause, I was listening to rock music and the Aerosmith song “Love in an Elevator” came on. I immediately thought, “Hot sex in an elevator!” And so began my story “Elevator Confidential.”

In honor of the song, I named my protagonist Jackie, a name mentioned in the lyrics. There are a few other nods to the song in the story. It talks about “workin’ like a dog for da bossman” and proclaims, “I really need a girl like an open book.”

The story starts out with Jackie having a really bad day thanks to her boss, who happens to be her father. As the story develops, it’s clear that Jackie is a very open book. At least, she is with Walden, her longtime secret crush—and her father’s best friend and business partner.

There’s another commonality between the song and the story, but I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

Below is a little taste of “Elevator Confidential,” which is now available in Chemical [se]X 2: Just One More.

Even as hungry as she was, chocolates that fine were to be savored, not scarfed like M&M’s. She brought one of the tiny cocks to her mouth and filled her lungs with the enticing aroma. Unable to wait any longer, she sunk her teeth into the hard, outer shell—only to be surprised when filling spurted out. Giggling, she used her free hand to capture a runaway stream of sticky sweetness before it dripped off her chin and ruined her favorite red silk blouse.

Jackie admired the wicked brilliance of filling naughty chocolates with white cream. Before any more of it oozed out, she put the rest of the morsel in her mouth, but let it dissolve on her tongue. Her taste buds exploded with the flavor of bitter chocolate and a sweet, minty confection that had a trace of something else. She didn’t recognize the unknown ingredient, but it was definitely intriguing.

Humming with pleasure, she licked and sucked her messy fingers clean until every drop was consumed. “They’re delicious, but messy.”

When Jackie looked up at Walden, she froze at his heavy-lidded expression. If he looked hungry before, he looked positively ravenous now.

 “You did that on purpose.”

She knew what he meant. As much as she’d love to take credit for teasing him, she was innocent in this instance. Still, Jackie was smart enough to seize an opportunity when she saw one.

When Three Isn’t A Crowd: The Story of Jo

It’s with a big smile that I welcome Justine Elyot to my blog today as part of her blog tour. It’s been way too long since this mistress of the craft of the erotica had a new book out- I can’t wait to read it.

Hello, I’m Justine Elyot and I’m here to talk to you about my new BDSM menage romance, The Story of Jo.

Hands up if you like a menage! You don’t have to be in a poly relationship to enjoy reading and fantasising about multiple partners – otherwise menage romance would be a lot more niche than it is. It’s popular for a reason. Double the partners, double the fun. And, when it comes to creating drama in a plot, the menage has plenty to bring to the table.

That’s why I couldn’t quite believe I haven’t written a full-on menage novel before. What was I thinking?

The book builds slowly to the menage situation, since I always think this is a dynamic that needs a lot of tender loving care prior to introduction. Jo and Emmett, blissfully happy in their own relationship, invite Emmett’s friend and long-term boss/mentor, Charles Fox, to their housewarming party. Jo and Fox head out to buy an extra bottle of champagne…and things start to happen..

Back at the top of our street, Fox looked both ways before sliding an arm around my waist and pulling me tightly flush against him. The movement was sudden and violent and made me drop the paper bag with the champagne in it on the pavement – happily, it didn’t smash.

“What are you…?”

“Listen,” he said. “We need to talk, don’t we?”

“I can’t…”

“I’m not going to make you do anything you don’t want to, Jo,” he said.

“Emmett…”

“You love Emmett. Emmett knows you love him. He also knows that I want you.”

“He knows that?”

“He knows it, and he encourages it.”

Encourages it?”

“He told you, didn’t he, about Suzette?”

“Yes.”

“Neither of us minds sharing.”

“This is mad. You think Emmett would be OK with me…and you…?”

“I don’t think it,” said Fox, bending his forehead to mine. “I know it. We’ve discussed it.”

“But not with me!”

“Until now.” Fox’s lips were almost on mine. I could just push mine that little bit further and… “Emmett was worried about scaring you off, if it wasn’t what you wanted. But you’ve given me just about every signal there is that you want me just as much as I want you, so I think perhaps the time has come to raise the subject.”

“Emmett’s just being fair-minded,” I whispered. “Because he had something of yours, he feels he has to repay the debt. You aren’t equal. He sees you as his mentor, his superior officer. He feels obligated to you.”

“That’s not how it is at all. This is how it is – Emmett loves you, you love him, I love him, he loves me, I want you, you want me. It’s not complicated. It’s very, very simple.”

“If it was that simple…”

“What?”

“I don’t know. I really don’t…know…”

But there was something I did know, and that was how easily Fox made every inhibition slip away, stripping me nude in some kind of dance of the seven emotional veils.

I was still claiming not to know when I opened myself up to his kiss, warming myself against him as if he were a fire, our feet moving aside to accommodate each other. He was unexpectedly well built underneath his shirt, a contrast to my rangy Emmett, and I took pleasure in the difference.

His lips were not the same either, and he had a different way of kissing, harder and less voluptuous, but with such strength behind it that surrender was the only option. I couldn’t have said which kiss I preferred.

Perhaps, after all, variety could be the spice of my life.

“You’re sure Emmett’s all right with this?” I said, gasping as he let me up for air.

“Emmett is the most admirable person I know,” said Fox. “He doesn’t allow room in his head for negative emotions. He doesn’t get jealous, he isn’t insecure, and when he loves somebody, he wants them to be happy. Do you know how incredibly rare that is?”

“Yes, and I know how lucky I am to have found him.”

“He knows you’ll never leave him, and he knows I’d never take you from him.”

“Like with Suzette?”

“Not quite. I never thought she’d be mine for keeps, but that didn’t bother me. This is different – a deeper bond. But look, I’m not going to ask you to decide now. Take as long as you need to think about it. If you decide it’s not for you, nobody will hold it against you. It’s completely up to you.”

He pecked me once more on the lips.

“Your decision,” he whispered, loosening his grip on me and bending to pick up the champagne. “Now, shall we get on?”

The walk back, short as it was, was severely impeded by my burning solar plexus and rubbery legs. How could I snap back into the Jo I had been ten minutes ago? Everything had changed. Nothing was the same.

The swagger of Fox’s stride, the roll of his shoulders a few inches above mine, the lingering sense of his beard on my skin all merged into a kind of hyperreality, making my surroundings vibrate around me.

Six weeks into marriage, and I was already unfaithful, adulterous.

But was I?

Walking back into the house, I was suddenly intensely conscious that my lipstick must have been kissed off, and I put my fingers to my lips in a textbook gesture of guilty concealment.

Emmett clocked it straightaway, his eyes holding mine as Fox dropped the bag on the table and said something about having to be careful opening it, as the bottle had been accidentally dropped.

“I’ll get the glasses from the kitchen,” said Emmett. “Jo…”

He didn’t come up with a pretext to get me in there with him, but I guess we all knew that none was needed.

Away from Fox’s eyes, Emmett pulled me quickly into his arms, putting his own finger to my ruined lips.

“Are you OK?” he whispered.

I couldn’t speak. I looked into his face, loving it more than I had ever done before.

“We need to talk,” I said.

He nodded. “Later, yes,” he said, then he kissed me fiercely. “I love you.”

I felt the brim of tears.

“I love you too,” I said. “So much.”

 Blurb:

“I met a man called Emmett, and now I belong to him.”

Twenty-something Jo meets Emmett on a team-building course, and her initial disdain for him soon turns into attraction.
With Emmett’s strong but loving hand to guide her, Jo unleashes her inner submissive and they embark on an intense voyage of sexual discovery.
Their mutual fascination sees them exploring bondage, spanking, toys and more, and their romance is as perfect as Jo could hope for, until another man appears on the scene.
She knows that Emmett hero-worships his former boss and mentor, Charles, but when she finds out that Charles is the man who introduced Emmett to the art of domination, she has no idea how to feel.
With fierce desire growing between the three of them, can they find a way to explore this new dynamic without destroying what they already have?
