Everyone Needs A Bedtime Story

Fifteen Years…and counting

This week sees the 15th anniversary of the first time I wrote some erotica! A fact that, in itself, seems impossible to me – a shy, self-conscious, paranoiac woman who has never quite got used to the fact that people actually want to by her books!

I still maintain that- if that very first story hadn’t been published- I’d never have picked a pen up for fiction creation ever again.

I am particularly fortunate in that, this year, I’m celebrating this anniversary with a trip to Barcelona courtesy of Fetish.com

Much to my surprise, when I was teaching at the Eroticon event last March, I won the 69 seconds competition…the prize being 2 nights in Barcelona. I fly there today!

You could see how I won my prize here-

As with any anniversary, I have found myself reflecting on all that has happened to me ‘writing wise’ over the past decade and a half.

What a roller coaster ride it has been. Or perhaps it’s been more of a carousel, a long roundabout of constant ups and downs, but where, ultimately you always end up back where started, and yet you can’t quite stop the ride to get off…?

My first piece of erotica was a written on a paper serviette in a cafe in Aberdeenshire. I swear the idea came to be from nowhere. I don’t know why I was suddenly thinking about a cross dressing male who liked to have his arse spanked- but that is exactly what happened.

It took some time for me to be brave enough to do anything with the story. It was a couple of weeks before it made it onto a proper piece of paper, and several more before it was typed onto my computer and edited into shape. The amount of courage it took me to look up erotica publishers on the Internet- and the covert way I went about it- seems laughable now.

I sent off my story- which I rather unimaginatively had called Jen and Tim to Cleis Press- never expecting to hear anything again, and in the meantime, I’d written a rather kinky poem called Regrets, which I sent to the much missed Oysters and Chocolate web site. Then, I told myself to leave it alone, to look after my children and take up knitting or something. I never expected to hear back from either publisher. I certainly never expected to get both pieces taken- and I truly never expected the buzz the feeling of acceptance gave me- that was it- I was hooked- an addict to the acceptance of a publisher for the rest of my life!

It took 40 short story and poetry publications before I was brave enough to write something longer, and when I did, I cheated.

The Collector is both an anthology and a short novel- a set of different erotic stories- one for every genre within the discipline. I learnt a great deal from writing hat book- and I still hold it in great affection.

Now, 15 years later, with over 200 stories to my name, including many novellas and novels, including the gratifyingly popular The Perfect Submissive Trilogy (The Fifth Floor, The Retreat, Knowing Her Place), I am still addicted, still hungry for the ‘yes’ of a publisher. Having a back record to your name never guarantees a story will be taken, and nor should it. Each new tale I write has to be worth publication on its own merits; it shouldn’t be published just because KJB wrote it.

Over the past 5 years, I’ve had less time to write erotica as I have been fortunate to have some success with my other pen names (Jenny Kane – contemporary fiction and Jennifer Ash – medieval crime), and I’ve set up a creative writing tutoring business called Imagine, (with my friend and colleague, Alison Knight)

Kay is still here however, and I’m pleased to be able to announce that before the end of 2019, my Fem Dom anthology, Yes Ma’am will be re-edited, recovered, and re-released. As well as this, the next anthology (Book Four) in my ‘A Kink a Day’ series will be released.

Meanwhile, my Jenny Kane side is now agent-ed, and excitedly awaiting the publication of a new romcom, and Jennifer Ash is busy writing the forth of The Folville Chronicles.

As well as this, I’ll have some erotica writing workshops up and running in 2020 – so watch this space!

Victoria Blisse, Tabitha Rayne, Kay, and Kd Grace at Eroticon 2019

There are so many people who have helped get me this far. So many friends I’ve made along the way- from the wonderful Brit Babes, to fellow bloggers and writers, to readers and positive sex supporters. I’ve very lucky.

I will end by saying thank you to a few extra special people who’ve helped keep me going on those occasions when the roller-coaster has got stuck at the bottom, or the carousel as jammed on the downward motion.

Kd Grace, Lucy Felthouse, Victoria Blisse, Ashley Lister, Renee and the staff of Sh.

I honestly can’t believe I’m still writing everyday, and living the life I love so much.

A Weird Way to Make a Living

After 12 years in the business, I have come to one overwhelming conclusion – this really is  weird way to make a living!

For example…

In 2013, I was at the big Erotica event in London. I was stood in a large show hall surrounded by semi clad folk modelling bondage equipment, looking at the latest line in metal cock harnesses, and wondering how much head room there really was in a human kennel- and no one was batting an eyelid. At what point in my life did this become normal? And how fantastic that it was so- well, ordinary (I say this in a good way)!!

Sex is fun. An overly simplistic sentence; but so true. And there I was, surrounded by people who are dedicating their entire careers to ensuring that it stays that way- that sex gets better- that every living person has the chance to have a better erotic experience; be they straight, gay, lesbian, large, small, able bodied, disabled, and so on… No one is excluded. The playing field is open and fair, and the air feels full of openness- how sad that an industry dedicated to make people feel good and happy, is so often shut behind closed doors. Anyway…

For example…

…there I was at the ETO show 2014, eating lube flavoured ice cream with my fellow Brit Babes ice cream (I went for lemon and peach lube on mine- DELICIOUS- something I wouldn’t normally say about lube). And then I was back again this year, sipping lube flavoured cocktails…

Vodka and Lube cocktails thanks to Systems-JO!!

Vodka and Lube cocktails thanks to Systems-JO!!

Now I’ve started to think about all the other things I’ve done, and all the things I’ve seen, that I’d never have experienced if I wrote any other genre but erotica., my head is full of memories- all of them extraordinary.

If I wrote horror stories, I’d never have been invited to the wonderful Sh Woman’s Store, to stand around tables of vibrators, reading passages from The Perfect Submissive or Not Her Type. I would never have been picked up by a nice young man from Vanity Studios in London (not as dodgy as it sounds) to do a photo shoot in Soho- which lead to another one the following year.

There would have been no trip to Erotica 2013, to sell my books to some of the friendliest people in the world- many of whom had forgotten to put all of their clothes on…There would be no Brit Babes, and there would be no Brit Babe team cheering us all on- unthinkable!!

BB antho- SJWIT_1

I’d never have visited the ETO shows, or been nominated for an award or three- I’m still amazed I won one!

If I didn’t write erotica, perhaps I wouldn’t look at any and every object around me and automatically change it into some sort of sex toy- without even registering I’m doing it. (At the moment it’s chocolate covered coffee beans- you’ll see in time!!) Perhaps everyone I speak to wouldn’t take each innocent sentence I say as an innuendo? I certainly wouldn’t be teaching classes on how to sex up the supermarket!!

I’m as sure as I can be that I wouldn’t get to stand in a public building and spank people, as I did At Smut by the Sea in Scarborough if I wrote sci-fi!

Spanking Lucy

I know for a fact that if I hadn’t spent the last dozen years in erotica my life wouldn’t be so full or so friendly. Okay, I get a few negative comments, and I could do without the occasional bit of stalker stuff, but WOW- it’s SO much fun!

It might well be a weird way to make a living- but it makes people happy. I’m not sure I’d have been able to say that if I had stuck with my very first job – working in a Welsh Hat factory….

Anniversary Week: Sweetie taster from The Collector

This week I’m celebrating 12 years in erotica, by sharing a few tasty tasters from my archive. Today, I’m in the mood for a little liquorice…

The Collector 2016

‘Perhaps I should explain that we work in a sweet shop. We sell the old fashioned kind of sweets in jars; lemon sherbets, kola-kubes, cherry lips, dolly mixtures, alongside all the new stuff and posh boxes of chocolates.

It all happened quite quickly I guess. It was obvious from the moment I took the job that we wanted each other, but initially we held back. Work isn’t the best place after all, especially if there are only two members of staff. Anyway, as I said, it was sort of inevitable really.

So, last Thursday evening, there I was, starkers on the bed, watching at my boss who was naked, commanding, and utterly gorgeous.

I was not tied to the bed, but I wish I had been. He’d ordered me to stay still, but it was unbelievably difficult to obey as my body desperately wanted to move towards him.

My arms were folded with my hands sat beneath my head, and my legs were pushed up so that my knees pointed into the air. It was as if I was about to undergo some unpleasant medical intrusion. He’d placed a soft silk cushion under my arse to give him, as he put it, “Better visual.”

He flashed a little bag in front of my eyes, but made sure I couldn’t actually see what it contained. I frowned at his long delicate fingers, unsure of what was coming next. He just smiled.

I tried to concentrate on what he was holding, but the heat surging through my breasts from the whipping they had just received was taking most of my attention. My nipples burnt and longed for a cooling tongue to kiss them better. I had to push my head back harder into my hands to prevent myself from moving them and rubbing myself off.

At last he showed me the packet. It was a Dib-Dab; a packet of loose sherbet with a cherry flavoured lolly conveniently included. When I was a kid I loved to suck all the sherbet off the sticky lolly.

I flinched as he ripped it open. There was something about the way he was looking at me that confirmed that the agony he’d previously inflicted was simply the first course, and that seconds’ was coming up. I longed to scream out ‘Just get on with it!’, but the ball gag which he’d lodged in my mouth prevented the luxury of speech, so I just had to content myself with biting down hard onto the black rubber intrusion.

My thighs felt slick with my own juices. I tried hard not to think about the picture I must have presented. As I’ve said, I wasn’t bound, but I was gagged, and my breasts were pressed through a tight black harness, pushing them up and exposing them as an easy target for the short riding crop I had discovered he kept in the corner of his bedroom.

He pulled the lolly out of the packet and put it in his mouth. As he sucked I could feel my nipples tremble. That was what they needed. I felt unbelievably jealous of a bloody sweet!

After what felt like an eternity he pulled the damp lolly from between his lips and advanced towards me. There was no hanging about, he stuffed its red oval head into my cunt and pushed it until all but the very end of the stick had been swallowed up into my starving hole.

The width of the lolly felt amazing as it stretched me open. I could feel the air rushing in around the thin stick, making me feel empty but full at the same time. I began to shudder in response to the contradiction of sensation, but he slapped my breasts hard and I silently cried out into my rubber guardian.

‘You will not come yet.’ His voice was like gravel, and for a second I had to remind myself that I had wanted this too. He began to slide the lollypop up and down and I closed my eyes, trying for all I was worth not to climax. A task made even harder when he knelt and began to lick the mixture of pussy juice and sweet syrup from around my hole.

I was shaking, I couldn’t help it. It wasn’t going to take much to push me over the edge, even though it had been forbidden. Then he did it. He climbed astride me and sprinkled the sherbet from the Dib-Dab packet all over my tits. The cold sweetie dust tickled as it landed on my sweating skin. My hips twitched as I began to fight a losing battle with myself. As his mouth enclosed my right tit, licking up the sherbet, I groaned into silence as the sweet fizzed against his tongue and my chest. By the time he began to feast on my left side I was shaking and bucking so hard I’m surprised he wasn’t knocked off.

He took very little notice of the fact that I had disobeyed him until every single drop of the tingling dust had been consumed. Only then did his face become a picture of disgust and lust in glorious combination. I began to shiver, no longer with desire, but in response to the look in his eyes. He picked up a liquorice boot lace from the pile of supplies he’d lifted from the shop. Licking the end to dampen it a little he lashed my right nipple hard. Tears instantly sprang to my eyes as he stung me again and again.

Then, taking a handful of the laces, he began to coil them around my harnessed breasts. The black strings were cool against my hot flesh and felt heavy against my need to be sucked, caressed and kissed. The ever growing pyramids of sweets created a sticky barrier against the attention I craved. Soon only my two swollen nipples were visible, poking out from the encircled breasts…

Eleven Years in Erotica…

I’m fairly sure that this time last year I said something like, ‘How can I possibly have been working in the world of erotica writing for ten years?’ And now, here I am, twelve months later, and I’m still here!

Eleven years! I can’t begin to imagine how many ultra erotic scenarios I’ve dreamt up over all that time, but I do know there have been over 140 stories, long and short, which have escaped from my relentless imagination!

It’s been quite a year for me, with my win at the ETO Awards and an honouree mention by the National Leather Association for excellence in BDSM writing. (For Knowing Her Place– 3rd part of The Perfect Submissive Trilogy)

ETO Awards trophy and champ 2015

There have been so many changes since I first dipped a toe (or biro) into the world of naughty words.  Obviously, the two biggest impacts have happened relatively recently- self publication (KDP from Amazon), and its subsequent flooding of the market with poor quality fiction, and the publication of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Another change- one that is particularly sad to me- is the lack of opportunities to submit short stories to anthologies. By short stories I mean stories that are 2000-5000 words- not stories that are 10,000-15,000 words long. Cleis Press proudly continue the short story submission, but few others within erotica still do. Why is this a problem? Because writing short stories- precise short stories that don’t allow for waffle or excess narrative- is an important skill, and a vital tool in becoming a better writer. Writing such tales can help you develop a voice of your own. Heaven knows it is all too easy to copy someone else’s voice, but we already have a Sylvia Day – we don’t need any more people copying her formula thank you very much!

In the last couple of months however I have noticed (and I hope this isn’t simply wishful thinking), that standards are- at last- beginning to rise again within erotica writing. New voices are coming through- and they can actually write. I kid you not! It would be unfair to name names- but they are out there, just a few so far, but they are snapping at my heels…. and I couldn’t be more delighted.

Erotica isn’t through the woods yet. Publishing as an industry remains a mess, and all I said about erotica in my blog about winning the ETO award is still the case. And of course, while James embarks upon a mission to rewrite her trilogy in different ways, and the copycat fiction continues, we have serious ground to cover if we are ever going to be taken seriously as a genre…but I can at least see, if I squint, light beginning to peep through the end of the tunnel as good new writers battle through the fog of crap.

light at end of tunnel

There has been one other major change in the last two years – and that is with my own writing life. In the early years I knocked out the erotica with an abandon that – looking back- was frighteningly fast. Since the end of 2013 however things have changed, for I am not just Kay any more. As many of you will know, I am also Jenny Kane– and Jenny sells books- because mainstream romance is easy to market. So, as the reality of getting my children through higher education bites, I have been spending the majority of my time writing romances with terrifying speed, and not tales of BDSM and physical pleasure.

Per Sub 3

I am still here though- waving the Kay flag, proudly being a Brit Babe, writing as many short stories as I can, and plotting and planning for a time when I can get the next naughty novel underway- it will happen- but patience will be required!

At the moment I am busily writing a new kinky Christmas story…more about that in November…and in October I will be teaching a writing workshop at Smut Manchester on how to sex up the supermarket!! Tickets for that are available now if you fancy it!! Here’s the link- http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/smut-manchester-2015-sponsored-by-amazingocouk-tickets-16087184201

And so- here I am- typing this blog in my corner of the café where I have spent the last 3 of my 11 years in erotica, cooking up my storylines. Why not join me in raising a cuppa to erotica? Here’s to hope for the future of the genre- to the Brit Babes- to Eroticon-to Smut UK- to Sexpo- to Sexihibtion- to the ETO- and to all the erotica bloggers, writers, and readers out there- and to another year of sexy thinking!!

Ten Years As Kay- Part 3- The Podcasts and Pictures

Welcome to the final of my mini blog series to celebrate my 10th anniversary of working in the world of erotica! It’s amazing how many things I’ve done as a result of my writing!

I can’t believe it was way back in Sept 2008 that I did my first ever podcast. Boy was I nervous! Thanks to the wonderful Dr Dick, aka Richard Wagner- I was quickly put at my ease- and so began, not only my first interview of many- but a friendship with Richard that I have treasured ever since.

If you want to listen to that first (2-part) podcast- here are the links!

Podcast 1

Podcast 2

It wasn’t long after that, that I did my first radio interview, for Talk Radio over in Spain- oh my word!! What a nightmare! Although I had been prepared for it to be a live show, and I’d been given all the questions that would be asked beforehand, I was a bag of nerves- not helped by the fact that in each advert break on the radio beforehand the presenter was making me sound like the dominatrix from hell! This was really annoying, as the whole point of the interview was to show that erotica writers were just normal wives, mum’s etc- not the stereotyped figures of the style she was alluding to!

When she actually began the interview, she didn’t ask me a single pre-prepared question, and was really hostile. All I could think about was the 3 million listeners!!! EEKKK.

I did my best, and was told it went well- but needless to say, that is not a station I will be going back to!!

I’ve lost count of the number of blogs I’ve written, newspaper and magazine articles I’ve been in, and the talks and readings I’ve given- and I’m still amazed by it all- amazed that people even ask me to do those things! And I really don’t want that feeling of ‘I’m not worthy’ to go. How awful it would be if that was the sort of thing I came to ‘expect’ to do! I’m just a writer after all!

I think one of the proudest moments for me, must have been when photographer David Woolfall took some pictures of myself and many of my peers, for The Independent. These photos have since appeared in many other magazines and online newspapers!! Incredible!!

brit babe button

And talking of proud moments- how can I not mention, the moment I was asked to be a Brit Babe! Or the day that  I learnt I’d been nominated for Best Erotica Writer of the Year by the ETO, and then going along, with my dear BB friends to the award ceremony- and then when KD won!!! Well- I was so proud I actually thought I might burst! Magic day.

Bringing things more up to date, last week I was lucky enough to be interviewed by the heavenly voiced, Rose Caraway, as part of her series promotion the forthcoming, Sexy Librarian’s Big Book of Erotica. I was honoured to be approached by Rose last year to write a short story for her book, and was even more ‘chuffed’ (Rose’s favourite English word), when that story was accepted. I loved talking to Rose- she is just wonderful- and if you’d like to hear what we said- take a listen-

The Sexy Librarian's Big Book of Erotica

I have been so lucky over the past 10 years- I’ve done things I never dreamed I’d ever do- photo shoots (with thanks to Vanity Studios), spanked people in a library (thanks Smut UK!), read erotica to strangers (bless you Sh! Women’s Store), taken a spanking lesson (ditto!)…Not what my teachers planned for me when I left school, that’s for sure!!

I’ll leave you in peace now- thank you so much for all your support over the last decade- let’s raise a cuppa to the next 10!!

Happy reading everyone!
